Arthritis Treatment For Those Who Are Sick of Joint PainOkay, I admit it: I have spent a high percentage of my waking hours adorned in some sporting colours locked in fierce combat with an opposition team. At the time I loved it and my body seemed like a well oiled machine. As I grow older, though, I begin to feel the physical repercussions of my former life, and this I don't love so much! Can anything be done to help me and the millions of other joint pain sufferers out there? Thankfully the winning combination of glucosamine and chondroitin seem to be winning a lot of fans. Our body, like a machine, has a limited lifespan and requires much care and maintenance in order to maximise its potential and ensure it lasts as long as possible. All wise mechanics and engineers will tell you that the key to a machine's output is best found in preventative measures rather than painstakingly lengthy remedies and cures. For too long I have watched the ageing, as well as fellow sportsmen and women, suffer at the hands of joint pain after years of high physical activity. On most occasions it is not our muscular or skeletal systems that give way to fatigue, but rather it is that which hinges those systems that throws up its hands - our joints! It did occur to me thoughout my sporting years that one day I may pay the price with joint pain and arthritis. I was a constant trainer and serious competitor in my day. Then within months of each other, both my Dad and Dad-in-law (who were both elite sportsmen in their young years) started suffering from debilitating pain in their elbows, shoulders, knees and neck. I watched with interest! The medical advice they received seemed to present them with two main choices: the first was to have an invasive procedure such as joint replacements and the second was to include in their diets proven supplements for reduction of joint pain. Both decided to opt for the less invasive solution,- (wimps! but wise in light of recent research!) - at least as a first step. Well, they were amazed with the results. What were these supplements? Answer- glucosamine and chondroitin, highly researched and recommended dietary supplements taken in combination. If you have ever suffered from arthritis or joint degeneration, you will know that it can be a debilitating experience. Without going into the intricate medical terminolgy and indepth physiological explanations that often confuse sufferers, it is often the combination of a diminishing level of fluids and a breakdown of cartilage that normally creates the easy sliding movement within joints which causes decreased movement and corrosion. Without this slipperiness, grating and scraping occurs and movement is restricted as pain is increased. It is not just the aged and elderly that suffer from pain due to arthritis, oesteoarthritis and other forms of joint disfunction. Observing a former elite sportsperson who has played sport at the highest level and represented his nation in Rugby League just a few short years ago, I was amazed at a recent sight. I watched him struggle to put his socks on, thanks to joint pain in his knees and back. Such a simple task for one still so fit but it was causing major discomfort. Yet, this discomfort can be radically lessened with the use of a supplement containing glucosamine and chondroitin. It would now place you in grave danger if you attempted to steal them from him! In many ways they are, and have been his saviour! Recent news has caused much rejoicing in the ranks of the sufferers of joint pain. Recent studies confirm that glucosamine and chondroitin do provide long awaited pain relief and much needed hope to sufferers. According to the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the clinical trial sponsored by the National Institue of Health found that significant pain relief was achieved by arthritis sufferers who used these two dietary supplements in combination. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally found in the body, the former plays a role in cartilage formation and repair and the latter is part of a large protein molecule which provides cartilage elasticity. But it is the combination of the two which seems to works wonders in sufferers. My Dad says it took him a couple of months of use until he fully felt the wonderful effect of it in his body. Naturally I do not recommend that you rely upon supplements alone to provide all the answers to your individual situation. Gentle physical activity can also assist in increasing movement and reducing joint pain. Ensuring that you stretch and warm up your joints should be a priority for everyone when exercising. I do suggest, though, that you combine your present regime with a supplement which combines glucosamine and chondroitin and just see how much your pain is reduced. When exercising, you should as a habit, warm up by stretching your joints and muscles. Careful that you do not overstretch or do too much too soon. Ideally your warm up should contain long, gentle movements and stretches should be held for around 10-15 seconds. You can supplement stretches with other movements dependent on your level of mobility and age, isometrics and probably even weight-bearing activities. Many people are shouting it from the hilltops: there is hope for arthritis and join pain sufferers. Don't suffer in silence. Two supplements seem to be the subject of recent research and annecdotal evidence. They are glucosamine and chondroitin taken in combination. I encourage you to give them a go and see what they can do for you. I am always delighted to receive emails from arthritis and joint pain sufferers who bill it as their knight in shining armour.
