Gain Weight: Why Do It?

There are many reasons why people want to gain weight. Some people want to gain weight because they are dissatisfied with their body image while other people want to gain weight for health reasons. Before you begin any weight gain program it is important that you understand how weight gain and weight loss works.

So specifically what is wrong with being under weight? Perhaps one of the biggest problems with being under weight is having weak bones. Research shows that people who are under weight have bones that aren\'t as strong as they should, and could, be.

Many people who are under weight are healthy and fit and simply have a body type that is slender and slight. This often means, however, that their bones aren\'t strong and this can lead to health problems. Women who are under weight may experience irregular menstrual cycles as well as problems with infertility. And when under weight people become ill they don\'t have as many \"reserves\", such as body fat, to fall back on.

Boys and girls in their early teens might want to gain weight because they feel that they are smaller than their peers. Many children are quite skinny until they reach the age of puberty at which time they start to gain weight and fill out.

Healthy people who are slender generally are in balance with their bodies and what they eat. Your normal weight is determined by your body type and by the genes that you have inherited from your parents. If you and your doctor determine that you are under weight and need to gain weight you\'ll have to alter the way you eat. Make sure that you plan a well balanced diet that is high in proteins and carbohydrates while at the same time is low in fat. You want the weight that you can to be in the form of muscle rather than fat. Fat gain leads to an unhealthy body with just as many health risks as when you are under weight.

Start by eating about 500 more calories each day than you normally do. If you have a lot of weight that you want to gain you should gradually increase your calorie consumption from 500 calories to 1000. Try to eat snacks during the day so that the calories are dispersed over a period of time. When given the choice, choose the higher calorie food option.

When you are eating meals, try to eater larger portions. This might be difficult for people who have a poor appetite. If this is the case, try to eat high calorie meals several times a day.

With time and patience, and by eating balanced meals that are high in calories, you should notice that you are gaining weight. If you find no difference in your weight you might want to talk to your doctor to see if there are any medical reasons why you are unable to gain weight.
