Mother's Day - The Simple WayAll Mums want to be appreciated. But children, even the big ones, often have so much going on in their lives, they forget how much their Mums do for them every day. Mother’s Day is that little nudge in the side that reminds us all to say thank you, at least once a year, for that unconditional love and support. Although Mother’s day is extremely commercial these days, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy into the commercialism if you don’t want to. The best gift you can give any Mum is to give her the gift of time spent with you. If you are far away, a phone call will do just as well as a visit. It’s the simple things that make the biggest impression. So here are some simple ideas that are sure to impress: 1. “I love you” (need I say more). 2. Breakfast – breakfast in bed for Mum is the way to go if you’re pint sized. The simple joy she’ll get from having you do something for her that she did for you uncomplainingly for so many years (well OK maybe just a few complaints, after all mothers aren’t saints!) will get her day off to a great start. For big kids, taking Mum out for breakfast (or lunch or dinner) will create a similar feel-good vibe. 3. Homemade cards – there’s really no substitute for cuteness than a Mother’s Day card made with all the concentration and love of your child. Their stunning work of art will be stored away and treasured for years to come. 4. Photos – the digital age is upon us and it’s so easy to take a picture of yourself and make something with it to give to her…maybe use it as the base for your Mother’s day card or make a frame around it so she can hang it up in the house. If you have children of your own, help them to make something with the picture. 5. Flowers – a simple hand-picked posy from the garden is one of the most traditional gifts for children to give their mothers. If you don’t live close by and aren’t able to hand-pick a posy then a store bought bouquet is a great substitute. You may want to include a white carnation, which is often handed out on Mother’s Day to symbolise the purity and strength of motherhood. 6. Time to herself – Sophia Loren once said “When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.” Time to oneself is rare for any Mum and a gift of time will be a cherished gift. Send her out shopping for the afternoon with her friends or splash out on a Spa Voucher so that she can really relax and get away from it all. 7. Chocolate – all Mums love chocolate, candy, nuts and other gourmet snacks. You can get gift baskets at all price ranges. An online UK gift company BeRapt has fabulous gifts including beautiful hand-made chocolate hearts that you can put your own personal message inside. 8. Personalised stationary – show her you went the extra mile to give her something just that little bit personal. Another UK company www.thepersonalpaperco.co.uk can help you organise this easily. 9. Travel – if you don’t live near your Mum why not send her a ticket to visit you. You can find great cheap deals if you book early, or why not cash in some of those frequent flyer miles? 10. Jewellery – homemade (there are some great beading jewellery kits on the market) or the priciest diamonds, it all depends on your budget but whichever you chose it will bring a smile to her face. Again, BeRapt has a fantastic mother and daughter silver bracelet set that doesn’t cost the earth, or check out the handmade Mayan heart music ball necklace.
