Physics in Pakistan

For a couple of years there has been observed a tremendous improvement in educational sector in Pakistan. The government has realized that the country can only be financially and politically strong if its brain ?the people with at least university level knowledge ?contribute their efforts in lifting up the status of Pakistan in international level. There has been taken good measures and new policies adopted by the chairman high education commission (HEC) Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman and his team under the supervision of the president Mr. Pervaiz Musharif. Several scholarships, research grants and educational exchange programs have been established and are being strengthened among different universities of the world. Fig. 1 (http://www.hec.gov.pk/new/QualityAssurance/Statistics/Number of UniversitiesDAIs in Pakistan (1947 to 2004-05).htm ) is a representation of a sharp growth of educational institutions during the past decade. It is a clear sign of increasing the literacy rate of the country. A public sector is generally patronized by the government of Pakistan which provides the student somehow a free education. The universities under private sector are semi government and financed by either different industrial projects, collaboration with foreign universities or with a high tuition fee. The accreditation of the curriculum is of the international level no matter the university is public or private.

Country with a Noble Prize winner ?Dr. Abdul Salaam who presented the theory of unification of the forces while working in Glasgow University in 1979 ?has tremendous hidden potentials. Specifically focusing on the trends of studying Physics in Pakistan, one can state briefly about a general structure of education system. Physics is almost a compulsory subject of the syllabus up to college and university level for the students who want to accomplish their Engineering or natural sciences degrees. About more than 50 universities have faculties consisting of Physics and advanced level laboratories as well. Apart from the university degree there are several “governmental based?laboratories like, Abdul Quadir-Labs (AQ-Labs), Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Centre for Nuclear Studies (CNS) etc?which contribute many folds in the country’s industrial products. In these laboratories there are bright chances to entail research projects based on one’s understanding of Advanced level Physics ?Both theoretical and applied.

Physics at the University of the Punjab:

since 1998, when there was a good start of cross-over to jump for further “polishing?of one’s brain, the students thinking ahead applying in foreign countries for higher degrees. There was two major factors behind this quantum jump: a ?to significantly express that Pakistan is not lagging behind in the filed of education especially in advance Physics and b ?to update one’s capabilities in the both branches of Physics i.e. Theoretical and Applied Physics and then bring that filled brain back to Pakistan in order to raise up the status of homeland in worlds?market. Under the supervision of honest, dedicated and well known professors in the University of the Punjab some students got admission in abroad on scholarship bases, student assistantships and fellowship schemes. Being an Ex-Student of Physics from the Punjab University, Lahore I came to Germany in 2002 and was alone in Stuttgart University. I secured Masters Thesis on the fabrication of Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors. A continuous direction and “lighting the candle by candle?kept some of my juniors, class fellows and fellows from the other university motivated to join me to pursue advance technologies in Germany. Until December 2005, 6 students from different universities of Pakistan studying Physics in Stuttgart University, Germany. Now the statistics show that in America, UK and Germany, Italy, Sweden there are many Pakistani physicist sharpening their experimental techniques and acquiring their higher degrees simultaneously.

The country with 150 million population has a lot of hidden talent and virgin natural resources. Consequently, if this brilliance of talent and those resources are guided properly the economy of the country can become equal to the leading countries of the world. The Higher Education Commission ?A board for administering the education structure, strategy, up to date level of modern education is responsible for the a good surveillance of the international and national scholarships in Physics and other academic subjects as well.

What the time demand is is to enlarge the implementation of Physics in industrial projects in Pakistan. For example, by creating special vacancies in companies, industries, and factories where student of physics can imply their applied experiences and technical knowledge and simultaneously secure their dissertation as a compulsory part of their university degree. For example the companies like Bosch, Infineon, AMD, NEC, Texas Instruments, Tyco, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony, in Germany, UK, and USA create many projects for the students. At the end of these projects students successfully introduce new products or several improvements in the industrial market.

What clearly required at the moment is to guide the students properly at the university level about the benefits of further studying in Advance Physics. Not only a good direction but there is also a need to fit one into his/her appropriate choice of field in this main stream of the technology. There is a great need of the “student exchange programs?with different universities in Pakistan and the ones in advanced countries. Consequently, it would provide the key improvement in the scope of natural sciences in the industrial application.
