What Do You Really Know About Instant Messaging? One of the cool things about Instant Messaging is the fact that it is so instantaneous. As soon as you enter a text message and press the send button or hit the enter key your intended party has received the message. Even though there is a slight delay for the actual transfer of data it does appear to be that fast. But think about. What do you really know about Instant Messaging? I will bet you did not know this. On your computer resides a piece of software called the client. On your friends computer that you are talking with they also have a client application loaded. Here is what you did not know. Those two pieces alone do not communicate together. No matter how hard you try to get these two client applications to talk to each other it will not happen. So how does it work? There is a key ingredient missing from this picture. For both to communicate with each other you will need a Server application. This special software actually negotiates all of the conversations that communicate like this. In fact, AOL probably has a very large network just for this application. Think about it, millions of people use this application everyday. You probably do or you know someone who does. Heck! I use it. And so do my kids. Here is another dark fact about Instant Messaging. It retains all conversations that were ever made through their chatting applications. Did you hear me? They keep all conversations. Can these come back to haunt us? Probably. But what are your kids saying online? Do you know?
